Q: What is Rail & Sail?
A: A product combining a Stena Line ferry crossing and train tickets from the UK to Holland (thanks to a partnership between Stena Line, Greater Anglia Rail, NS-Dutch Railways and the RET Rotterdam Public Transport).

Q: How does it Rail & Sail work?
A: It is possible to choose from 2 options;

  • Any Greater Anglia station in the UK to any NS station in the Netherlands including crossing Harwich to the Hook of Holland *
  • Harwich International Port to any NS station in the Netherlands including a crossing from Harwich to the Hook of Holland.

Both options can be booked as a single trip as well as return.
*Can only to be reserved up to 3 days before departure.

Q: How can I book a Rail & Sail ticket?
A: Tickets can be booked online through the Stena Line website or by calling +44 (0) 343 208 1800. For bookings made by telephone we will a €15 reservation fee will be charged in addition to the ticket price. We recommend international customers to book online.

Q: Do I need to print my e-ticket?
A: Yes, as a precaution, please make sure you print a copy of the itinerary / e-ticket before the start of your journey. It will be accepted as a valid travel document for your rail journey on Greater Anglia rail services in the UK and for your ferry crossing from Harwich International Port. If you've made a booking including train tickets in the Netherlands, you'll receive a separate email from Stena Line with a link to the NS website to book your train tickets by using special NS coupon codes.

Q: How do I book my train ticket in the Netherlands?
A: On the NS Website using the coupon codes received in the separate email from Stena Line. You can choose your travel dates together with the start and end stations for your journey. If you are booking a separate RET metro journey (for example from / to Schiedam Centrum or Rotterdam Alexander), choosing a station is not necessary.

Q: How much luggage can I take?
A: Foot passengers can carry up to 2 extra luggage items of 20 kg (maximum). This luggage will be checked on day trips unless you have a cabin booked. If you have booked a cabin, you must put the luggage in the cabin.

Q: Is it possible for my pet to travel with me?
A: Yes, Stena Line is part of the PETS travel scheme. Simply add the number of pets that are travelling with you when booking online. Pets travel free on Greater Anglia trains (Harwich to London) and small pets must travel in a carrier on your lap on Dutch trains. Large dogs will require a dog-day pass for approximately €3.

Q: Can I take a bicycle with me?
A:There are restrictions on non-folding bikes on busy services. For the comfort and safety of all passengers, only folding bikes can be included in a booking. This applies to the services to Stratford and London Liverpool Street Station:

Restrictions apply on services from Monday to Friday (except on public holidays).

  • All trains arriving in Stratford or Liverpool Street between 07.45 and 09.45
  • All trains departing from Stratford or Liverpool Street between 16.30 and 18.30

Carriage of bicycles is allowed on the metro line from Schiedam Centrum to Hook of Holland:
  • Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 16:00 and after 18:30;
  • All day on Saturday and Sunday


Q: Is it possible to change my booking?

A: Yes, please  call our Customer Contact Centre on +44 (0) 343 208 1800. A €15 amendment fee per leg plus any difference in the fare rate will be charged. If the fare rate is less then the price originally paid the price difference cannot be refunded.


Q: What if I need to cancel my booking?
A: Unfortunately, refunds cannot be processed on Rail & Sail product.
