Madame Tussaud’s has been a legendary London tourist destination for a long time! But posing with all your favourites for a photo opp is just one way to spend the day in the UK’s capital city.
The most popular tourist attraction in London – in fact, in the whole of the UK - is the London Eye. Opened on New Year’s Eve, 1999, back when it was called the Millennium Wheel, it’s Europe’s tallest and offers 360˚ views of the city and beyond. Look out for Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament as well as Buckingham Palace.
If you want to get a little more up-close-and-personal with the city sights and are visiting London for the first time, a hop on, hop off bus tour is the way to go. You can get a 24 or 48-hour ticket that gives you unlimited travel. Bus tours also take in the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s and Trafalgar Square.
If you’re more of a culture vulture, London is your spiritual home. A lot of the museums and galleries are FREE, which means you have more to spend on treating yourself! The Tate Modern is home to work by artists like Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Rothko, Dalí, Pollock and Warhol, while at Tate Britain you’ll find JMW Turner, Lucian Freud, David Hockney among others.
When you travel to London you can also visit the Natural History Museum, the British Museum, the National Gallery and the V&A. Or you can literally travel through time at the Transport Museum, finding out about everything from the famous London buses to how technology is transforming the city for future generations.
Venture off the beaten track and under the skin of this global city and you’ll find there’s much more on offer. London is a collection of distinctive neighbourhoods each with its own global cultural influences. That means an infinite number of independent shops, restaurants and attractions from Covent Garden to Greenwich, Camden Town to Croydon and from the West End to Waltham Forest.
For food and drink, London can’t be beaten for choice. Quirky restaurants, Michelin-starred dining, street food from around the world and some good old national favourites are all on the menu. Find yourself a great beer garden for some alfresco wining-and-dining, take a classic British afternoon tea or do some celebrity spotting at a fancy restaurant.
