Skagen

Known as the “Land of Light”, Skagen is an old fishing village that dates back 600 years and is located in the northernmost point of Denmark where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea on the Jutland Peninsula.

Grenen is the most popular destination in Skagen and it’s in Grenen that the two seas meet – you can even stand with one foot in each sea - Kattegatt and Skagerrak. Skagen is known for its amazing light as well as its nature, the beautiful white sand beaches and its yellow houses with their red tiled roofs – don’t forget to pick up a souvenir of one to take home! You’ll love the stunning sunsets at Gammel Skagen and at Solnedgångsplatsen which is a great sunset viewing spot as the large solar disk with granite circles captures and reflect the sun's rays spectacularly.

Skagen has lots of cosy restaurants with classic Danish, Asian and French dishes on the menu. The many harbour cafes and restaurants are a great place to sit and watch the world go by. Make a stop at Skagenbryggan located in the marina where you can enjoy the views and the fresh sea air. Skagen Brewery is Denmark's northernmost brewery and is a great place to enjoy a tour, some beer tasting and a light lunch – there’s usually live music at the weekends too.

Skagen is an art lovers dream! It has so many great museums to visit, including the teddy-bear display at Skagen’s Bamsemuseum and the Skagen Museum where you can view the famous Skagen Paintings. The “Skagen Painters” were a group of artists who came to Skagen and were inspired by the light and landscape. Pay a visit to Anchers house, a beautiful and well-preserved home from 1935.  Drachmanns house is also worth a visit too. The local history museum, Kystmuseet Skagen, is a combined open-air museum and exhibition centre containing special collections featuring fishing, the lifeboat service and shipping.

About 16km before arriving in Skagen you’ll find Råbjerg Mile, commonly known as North Jutland's Sahara Desert! It’s a great place to kick off your shoes and walk on the beautiful sand. A couple of kilometres from Skagen you’ll find “The Sand-Covered Church” or Den Tilsandede Kirke. The church is estimated to have been built in the second half of the 14th century and was at that time, the largest church in the northernmost part of Jutland. Sand migration meant that the congregation had to dig their way into the church when they wanted to attend services! Today only the tower of the ancient church is visible.

Danes love their winter swimming and the tradition of winter swimming is especially strong in Northern Denmark – you’ll find many beautiful places to winter swim and Skagen is one of the most popular spots for this. Who doesn’t love diving into very cold water for a super winter thrill?
