Trondheim

From cityscape to landscapes!

Located on a namesake fjord approximately 6 hours north of Oslo, central Norway’s Trondheim is steeped in history, adventure and charm. Its wealth of experiences and gorgeous landscapes make it perfect for a weekend trip or a family vacation.

In Trondheim, 1,000 years of history coexist with a unique modern flair. The city is also home to the world’s northernmost gothic cathedral, Nidaros Cathedral, as well as the historic Kristiansten Fortress, which was built after the great city fire of 1681 and offers stunning views. And if you fancy a royal experience, visit Stiftsgården: the royal residence’s majestic halls are open for tours during the summer months.

On the modern side of the spectrum, the hip Bakklandet neighbourhood is a popular meet-up spot where you can wander along cobbled streets on foot or rental bike. It is also home to he world’s first bicycle lift: The “Trampe” lifts people (and their bikes) up the steep slope from near the iconic Old Town Bridge to the historic fortress.

The city square, Trondheim Torg, is a busy hive of restaurants and shops that becomes extra magical at when it transforms into a Christmas market for the holidays. Located not far from the city centre is the Solsiden shopping centre, which has popular fashion brands and a rich variety of restaurants to choose from.

Nowadays, Trondheim is famous as one of the best places to experience the flavours of Norway. Nicknamed “Home of the Nordic Flavours,” the city is a prime destination for food lovers thanks to inventive chefs and a focus on regional, seasonal ingredients throughout the city. For beer lovers, Hammerhead Brewery, Austmann Brewery and E.C. Dahls Brewery offer up great ways to taste your way through Norway’s brewing traditions.

Of course, Trondheim isn’t just a fun city: It’s a gateway to Norway’s incredible natural playground in the fjord and beyond. Visit Ilabekken, a blue-green corridor that joins the city with Bymarka nature reserve. This hiking trail starts close to the city centre and ends at Theisendammen, one of Trondheim’s most popular swimming lakes.

Want to embrace your inner warrior? Take part in the five-day experience known as Go Viking: You’ll discover how to survive in nature and learn how to prepare and cook food over an open fire. If you’re after a shorter but challenging hike, check out Gråkallen: Perfect for families, you’ll find great views of Trondheim at the summit – and if you’re lucky, you might even see the Aurora Borealis during the winter months.

In Trondheim, the modern and the ancient live in harmony, and stunning nature and a lively city experience are both waiting to welcome you. It’s the Norwegian experience you’ve been dreaming of.
