Maastricht

The Sounds of the Underground!

Whatever pace you enjoy life at, and whether you prefer to explore on land, underground, or on water, Maastricht has something for everyone.

Whilst strolling through Maastricht and taking in the stunning architecture of its churches and monuments, you will quickly realise that it’s one of Holland’s oldest cities.

Travel to the old town part of Maastricht and see the cobbled streets of Vrijthof Square. Sit down and enjoy the atmosphere in one of its many restaurants whilst tucking into a slice of Limburgse Vlaai (a fruit pie). Sint Servaasbrug is regarded as the oldest bridge in Holland and runs over the Meuse River. This stunning 13th-century structure is a sight to behold and is a must-see when visiting the city.

Dating back to the 11th century, The Basilica of Our Lady is a renowned Roman Catholic Basilica. Its main attraction is the statue of Our Lady, Star of the Sea.

Discover Maastricht by boat and spend the day on a Maastricht Cruise. You can also take advantage of a package deal and combine the cruise with an activity of your choice, maybe visit a brewery or winery.

If you’re a keen shopper, then you will be delighted with the array of shops that Maastricht has to offer with shopping malls and special boutiques stocking luxury brands. No matter what day of the week you’re in Maastricht, you can browse one of the city’s many markets.

Pick up a bargain at the Flea Market, open from 10am to 4pm, and spend hours checking out the antique furniture and perusing boxes of old books and records. Get into the festive spirit with a visit to the Maastricht Christmas Market from 1st December to 31st December and pick up some Christmas treats. Go skating on the ice rink on Vrijthof square and take in the spectacular sea of lights from the top of a Ferris wheel.

There is a plethora of museums and art galleries to explore in Maastricht. Centre Ceramique is ideal for those wanting to learn more about Limburg and Maastricht and showcases archaeological finds, Maastricht pottery, and glasswork. Twice a year, Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof houses a giant exhibition showcasing work from prominent photographers.

Maastricht is regarded as one of the best dining cities in Holland and it also has wonderful vineyards, some of which date back to Roman times. You can learn about the history and embark on a wine-tasting tour. Go one step further and stay over at the Domein Holset vineyard and treat yourself to a wine experience against the backdrop of the hills of Limburg.

If you prefer beer, then stop by Brouwerij Bosch, one of the remaining breweries in Maastricht. Sign up for the two-hour tour and see the brewing equipment, learn the process, and sample some of the delicious beers.

Pair amazing wine with incredible food when you dine in Maastricht. Whether you’re on a limited budget or looking for a fine dining experience, you’ll be delighted with the range of restaurants and foods available. Try zuurvlees which is a traditional beef stew served with chips and apple sauce.

How about a tour beneath Saint Peter’s Mount and exploring over 80 kilometres of caves? Guided tours are available, and you can learn what life was like in the dark tunnels when people used to hide in them during wartime when Maastricht was under siege. At one point, the caves were even used to keep Rembrandt’s iconic ‘Nightwatch’ painting safe during WWII. Experience the Casemates of Maastricht, a network of underground passageways that were used to surprise the enemy when the city was under attack.

A trip to Maastricht is guaranteed to be an action-packed adventure, packed with flavoursome food, iconic architecture, and miles of underground worlds waiting to be explored.
