Go for a stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, which is the most famous street along Nice’s Mediterranean waterfront. Promenade des Anglais translated as the Walkway of the English and its name comes from the English aristocrats who travelled to Nice in the 18th century to take advantage of the warmer climate.
The famous red roofs of the Old Town can be seen from any part of Nice. The central square is called Place Massena and right in the centre of it is the Fontaine du Soleil. The fountain features five bronze statues representing Earth, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus, and in the middle sits a 7 metre tall statue of the Greek God, Apollo. There are many sights to see whilst in the Old Town, such as the Cathedral of St. Reparata with its brightly coloured dome, it is a beautiful building to visit.
The Nice Cathedral is in the small but beautiful square of Place Rossetti. See the opulent decorating of the False Gate that leads to the newer part of Nice, the passage is lined with marbles and its ceiling looks like it was decorated with real gold! The Old Town is a pedestrianised area and there are free walking tours available, so join one and don’t miss out on what the Old Town has to offer.
Another main attraction in Nice is Castle Hill. If you don’t fancy climbing to the top of this 92-metre-high hill, there is an elevator! After reaching the top of Castle Hill, you can take in amazing views of the city below including views of the cathedral ruins in the city centre and the Old Port of Nice. Take advantage of photo opportunities at the artificial waterfall which is located below the observation deck and has a lovely panoramic view of the city.
Whilst in Nice, take advantage of the day trips that are available on the French Riviera. Explore the glamour and lights of Cannes where celebrities and socialites gather for the Cannes Film Festival, immerse yourself in the splendour of Monte Carlo or pause for a pitstop in Monaco.
